With experience and excitement, Jets softball ready to start conference season

While recent years have been difficult for some sports, Jackson College Jets softball is welcoming back several returning players – some even for a third year – which makes this year's lineup one of most experienced the school has seen.

Softball recently returned from their spring break trip to Florida where they went 8-2. They beat ranked teams Pasco Hernando State College (14) and Triton College (15) and chalked up some impressive statistics:

  • Offensively the team scored 87 runs, 92 hits and 36 stolen bases
  • Pitching staff combined for 57 strikeouts and a 2.3 ERA

"We had a successful spring trip. We were able to secure a couple of 7th inning wins, we manufactured runs when needed and overall played solid defense," said coach Jamie Vandenburgh. "Playing that many games in a row doesn't allow for many adjustments so we are looking forward to practicing this week and getting back in the cages. Our focus right now is on Conference play!"

Conference play starts with a rematch Friday against rivals Muskegon Community College – the team that beat the Jets in their region championship game last season. "The returners are fired up for this game," Vandenburgh said.

With many players returning – some thanks to an extra year of eligibility because of the pandemic – several incoming first-year students stepped up already in Florida as well. "They are playing their parts well and going a great job. I'm excited about where we are, we seem to be meshing and jelling well."

While work continues on improvements to the softball diamond on campus, the Jets will play several away games in their first couple weeks. The rest of the season should see several Saturday home games, and Coach Vandenburgh hopes the College and community will come out to the Saturday games and cheer on the team!

"We are excited to get out there as soon as we can. We would love to see and hear our fans out here supporting their Jackson College Jets."
