Commodores Pick Up Win Vs. Delta At Owens Invitational

September 1, 2024 - - The Lorain County Community College volleyball team salvaged a tough weekend at the Owens Invitational with a win on Saturday against a National Junior College Athletic Association Region 12 rival in Delta College.  The junior college volleyball showcase, host by Owens Community College, took place in Perrysburg, Ohio and had 52 matches scheduled for the weekend.

Teniya Jenkins: 27 kills, 15 Blocks (2 solo), 18 digs

Recap

LCCC got off to a bumpy start in the first day of competition, starting with a five-set loss to Jackson College on Friday morning before losing in straight sets to Sandhills Community College in the afternoon. 

 

After using overtime in the first set to win 28-26 vs. Jackson, the Commodores took the second set, 25-22. The Jets rebounded to tie the match at 2-2 and force a deciding fifth set which they won, 15-12.  Ava Haddix (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele) and Teniya Jenkins (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Trinity HS) each got their first double-digit kill matches of the season with Jenkins having 11 and Haddix with 10 including a season-high 45 assists.  Paige Grobolsek (Sheffield Village, Ohio/Brookside HS) had five service aces for the second match in a row (5 vs. Hocking College, 8/24/24).  The Commodores were a problem for Jackson College on the net, combining for 20 blocks.

 

Against Sandhills, Haddix had 18 assists and 10 digs.  Also logging double-digit digs were Isabella Beck (Wellington, Ohio/Wellington HS) and Gabriella Habeck (Huron, Ohio/Edison HS).

 

On Saturday morning, the Commodores bounced back in their first match of the day with a 4-set win against Region 12 Division 3 rival Delta College. LCCC won the first two sets before Delta took the third to avoid the sweep.  The Commodores responded by hitting .303 as a team in the fourth to get their second win of the season.  Haddix had 40 assists with 13 digs.  Grobolsek had a team-high 17 digs. Beck had 11 kills and 11 digs while Habeck had 12 kills and 12 digs.  Kaylynn Hannan (Sheffield Village, Ohio/Brookside HS) had 4 services aces.  Nilaysia Todd (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) had 7 blocks in the contest to go along with her 10 kills against the Pioneers.

 

To finish off their slate of games at the Owens Invite, LCCC battled Mott Community College after falling down two sets.  They forced overtime in the third set by hitting .400 as a team against the Bears.  However, Mott won 26-24 despite Todd's nine kills and .444 hitting percentage in the match. Haddix posted 24 assists.  Habeck logged 10 digs.
