Saginaw Twp – The Delta College Pioneers hosted Jackson College for a MCCAA Eastern Division clash that saw the home team pull out a convincing 9-1 win in game one before dropping the nightcap, 7-0. The win in game one was head coach Danny Smith's 200 career victory as the head coach at Delta College.
"It seems like last year that we started the program and picked up our first program win," said the seventh year head coach. "We've had great teams in that span that all contributed to those wins and I'm grateful for each and every one of them."
Grant Dittmer was lights out on the hill in game one for Delta as he tossed a seven inning gem, limiting Jackson to one run on two hits while striking out 10 for his fourth win against one loss on the season. The Pioneers scored at least one run in every inning, led on offense by Matt Fisher and Evan Pocius, each with two hits. Seven of the nine batters in Delta's lineup had at least one hit.
The offense couldn't get going in game two as Jackson limited the Pioneers to just four hits in the game. With the score 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Delta loaded the bases with one out but couldn't score.
Kane Bourbina took the loss on the hill to drop his record to 0-2 on the season. He threw six innings and gave up four earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
Delta is now 15-16 on the season overall and 9-9 in conference play. They travel to Sandusky, Ohio to take on Region XII foe Lorain County in the first of their season's four game series. The Pioneers are currently in second place in the regional standings, two games behind Schoolcraft College. The team with the best record in region play will receive the number one seed and get a bye in the first round of the Region XII Championship Tournament. The tournament will be played at Sprenger Stadium in Avon, Ohio from May 11th through the 13th with the winner moving on to the Super Regional against the winner of Region IV.
