Lady Tribs start strong, hold off Jackson

JACKSON, Michigan - The MCC women's soccer team started strong and held off a late rally to defeat host Jackson College 4-3 in Monroe's first round contest of the season Friday.
The Tribunes (3-2) will wrap up the brief road trip with a game against Iowa Central CC in Jackson on Sunday.
Monroe and Jackson battled through 25 scoreless minutes before the Tribs broke through. Jordyn Ruston scored off an assist from Ashley Williams to give MCC a 1-0 lead.
Monroe then added a pair of goals in a span of one minute and 17 seconds to take a 3-0 lead. Hayley Verkey nabbed the first score off a pass from Brie Heitz, and Jai Jackson scored unassisted as MCC took command.
The Jets found the back of the net with just over a minute left cut the deficit to two.
Coumba Sow helped the Tribunes restore a three-goal lead as she scored with 11:35 left in the game. Maddie Ferris assisted on the play.
The Jets added two late goals, including one with just 15 seconds remaining, but couldn't come up with the equalizer.
