Cross country welcomes new runners, prepare to build

It's a new year and new teams for Jackson College cross country!

Coach Serafin Llerena said has recruited three men and two women for this year's teams, after losing all his Jets runners from the past couple of years, some moving on to run for four-year universities and others graduating and entering the workforce.

"We are a young team but definitely a very talented group," said Llerena, now in his fifth year of coaching the Jets. "We're looking to build and have a strong season, accomplish a lot of goals get as many kids as possible to nationals, and keep building on for next year."

This year's team includes:

Women

  • McKenna Marsh, a freshman from Manchester. McKenna was a regional placer for Manchester.
  • Jessica Furman, a freshman from Lumen Christi

Men

  • Devin Mackenzie, a freshman from Manchester
  • Preston Mackenzie, a freshman from Manchester. Preston was a regional placer for Manchester.
  • Tyler Nowak, a freshman from Tecumseh

"We're a young, strong team, I believe this core is the future for us," Llerena said.

Cross country will start the season on Sept. 1 when they travel to Olivet College.
